London, UK based Design Studio, creating one-of-a-kind , small series & ltd edition products using digital manufacturing technologies.

Based on the principle that the piece does not necessarily have to be a jewel, Alicia is always playing with the possibilities of shapes, materials and contexts, while an extra dimension will be added by its unique relationship with the wearer.

Working in a range of different materials and a variety of finishes from metallic plastic to sterling silver, gold plated stainless steel and polished bronze.

“I am thrilled in exploring the aesthetic consequences of this fast evolving technology as it allow me to create objects with complex geometries that would be otherwise next to unachievable to make by hand or other traditional manufacturing methods.”

ABOUT

Argentinian- born and London-based, Alicia Felberbaum, is an Artist Designer Maker that operates within the intersection of design, computation and digital fabrication to create digitally crafted artefacts. She creates unique and limited edition pieces of jewellery and objects from minimalist accessories to sculptural wearable pieces.

During her course for her Masters degree (1990’s) in Fine Art Textiles at Goldsmith’s College, Alicia began to experiment with the pairing of artistic media and technology.

As a designer and artist, using digitally generated and additive manufacturing technology, gives Alicia far exciting and greater flexibility to create and physically produce her designs.

DESIGN PROCESS

Additive manufacturing machines work  from a digital model file using sophisticated digital tools. Those files have the potential to have an exact copy of a model that could be manipulated, changed, and reprinted in various  materials. Designing to create individual pieces in different materials, ranging from plastic to precious metals, requires understanding of the properties and processes involved in manufacturing each of them  (properties: ex. thickness, flexibility, finishes, coatings, etc) (process: casting, filament, polish, etc).

“Sometimes I have a brief, for example  exploring the properties of a specific material. In WAVE bracelet  my aim was to look into the flexibility of PLASTICS, its translucency and light weight. I aimed to design an object that is comfortable to wear despite being bulky. The objects I design and make are those which I would personally like to wear myself .”

“In some occasions I have no brief, and I let  my design grow organically during the process while I shape through sketching, and digital modelling.

In both cases I order prototypes checking sizes, texture and how it fits the body, tweak for improvement, and repeat till I am satisfied with the results. Some products take a few iterations to get them right. The process to design a piece can take between three days, and in some cases can take years.”

MY STORY

“During the beginning of the 90’s I started to experiment with  digital video creating what it was called then NET ART. I was editing and uploading videos to stream on the internet, they had to be compressed and rendered during the whole night! (VIMEO/ link to some of my movies).  I carried on working in art video projects till 2014. (Exquisite Corpse Video Project and Traffic Jam Project ).

After working with digital video for so many years I had the need to go back to tangible objects. About three years ago, my curiosity and passion to learn new digital tools, got me to learn Blender, a 3D design software, which was a real eye-opener. I became fascinated designing my wearable objects blending my passion  using digital tools and my need to create real objects that could be touched,  worn and enjoyed by other people. And…  I love it!”
